Text: Every nationality in Russia had a Republic, except the Jews. So, the Kremlin decided to build a Jewish state, Birobidzan, in the far east. After more than six months looking for any kind of work and not finding it, Jasha joined a group to go and b uild Birobidzan. On the 1st of March, two weeks before his 23rd birthday, he started with a group of young Jewish men on the long journey.

At the beginning there were regular letters. Nothing was being built: there were no supplies, no plans, no engineers. They were accommodated in tents. Anyone with any brains ran away. Jasha stayed for a few months but when summer came, and still noprospect of work, he went to Vladivostok. There was nothing there either, so he joined an expedition to the taiga out of Blagoveshchensk to hunt snakes for their skins. This was an absolutely monumental adventure for Jasha. Blagoveshchensk is on the river Amur, which separates China's Manchuria from Russian Siberia.

...
Mama had given Jasha up for dead, but Jasha was in a dense far-east forest. His letters couldn't get out but he kept on writing, and when he got out from the forest he sent all these letters at once. He had made good money after selling his share of the snake skins.

Note: Went there to help build Jewish autonomous region. He was quickly disillusioned with the project by extreme hardship and prison-like conditions. Several month later he managed to escape.
